Hi, I just inherited a house in Oakland, CA. I know a lot about the house and I know that there are a lot of extra things added to the house without permits and also the basement was converted into a living space with it's own 2 bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. Once I get the place I would like to do things right and get permits for everything and fix up what need to be fix. I have no intention in blaming my family member for their mistake but I was just wondering will I be fined for getting this house. They did the renovation over 10-15 years ago and didn't know it was illegal because they were immigrants and don't know much about zoning laws. I do hope to turn the house into a proper rental unit once I figure things out. But still how much problem will I get once I get the place. I willing to pay for renovation and permits but I just worry about legal issue that can happen.... Read More »
